Open Source Solar Powered Cooking & Canning Project
Parabolic (dish-shaped) Concentrating Solar Collectors first came into use in the mid 1800s.
Although these well known Solar Energy techniques have been used as a
source of thermal power for many purposes, the most common applications
have been in cooking and food preparation.
The objective of this project is to design and develop practical, Up-To-Date
ways for individuals and communities to take advantage of Solar Power
for cooking and preserving their food. Although there are
some very impressive examples of community solar powered kitchens,
there are yet to be any large scale solar powered canneries. A
common use of solar power for food preservation is the dehydration or
drying of foods. Unfortunately, dried foods are not as valuable
or versatile as canned foods are in many respects.
When food is canned, it is preserved in a much more durable and less
ephemeral way. Also, the range of products that may
be canned is limited only by one's imagination.
